We are growing a winter pea/barley crop in here to try and get ahead of the potential spring drought. This has been harrowed to try to reduce the weed burden – mainly charlock – and to loosen the dock plants which are always present on this farm!
There is wild bird feed planted around the edge which will set seed for the birds over the winter.
The nodules on the pea roots support nitrogen fixing bacteria, and these clever little things, fix it from the air – no artificial fertilisers here!
You can often see the heads of deer enjoying this crop…
The winter bird feed around the edge sets seed for the winter, when birds need it most.
